This research investigation was designed to elucidate the interactive spatial dynamics of a protected population of white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus seminolus) in Everglades National Park and a hunted population of deer in the immediately adjacent Big Cypress National Preserve: The primary hypothesis was that deer resident in the sanctuary area would disperse into the proximate hunted area from which population density had been reduced by recreational harvest (density-dependent population response). Secondary hypotheses were that deer resident in the hunted area would seek refuge in the adjacent sanctuary area during the hunting season, and that deer resident in the hunted area would seek concealment habitat during the hunting season. The study area, which parallels the boundary between the 2 land management units, encompasses about 62 km2 of contiguous wet prairie/tree island habitat.
