The objective of a one year study initiated in June 1973, was to test the hypothesis that benthic macroinvertebrate communities of regions of Great Smoky Mountains National Park streams receiving Anakeesta leachate were adversely altered in comparison with upstream unpolluted areas. Emphasis was placed on the following aspects: 1)chemical-physical characterization; and 2) benthic macroinvertebrate community assessment of two streams receiving man-induced acid stress(Beech Flats Prong and Noland Creek) and one naturally acid stream (Walker Camp Prong).
