Age of Mature Pine (Pinus taeda) Stand in South Carolina
Stalter R. 1971. Age of Mature Pine (Pinus taeda) Stand in South Carolina. Ecology. 52(3):532 - 533
A mature stand of Pinus taeda in the Congaree Swamp was sampled with twenty 10- by 10-m quadrats for trees and 20 smaller quadrats for saplings and seedlings. Annual ring counts indicated that most trees are 100-175 years old. Lack of pine reproduction and copious development of hardwoods suggest that this pine sere has nearly reached its culmination, but has existed much longer than P. taeda seres elsewhere.
