This report describes the intricate ecosystem and values of the Big Cypress area of south Florida; it also delineates immediate threats and considers various forms of protection. The report was prepared from four other studies in response to the Secretary of the Interior's directive for a study of alternative uses of the Big Cypress Watershed. Much of the report focuses on hydrologic aspects: Big Cypress as a natural water conservation area, and interrelationship with Everglades through influence on such downflow resources as estuaries, coastal mangroves, and other valuable marine and terrestrial components. The summary lists 5 benefits of protecting the Big Cypress area from ill-considered exploitation. The report discusses action alternatives, recommending number V as 'the best combination of State-Federal cooperation....'This report was prepared in response to the Secretary of the Interior's directive for a study of alternative uses of the Big Cypress Watershed in south Florida. The report offers a general description of the area's natural attributes and its significance to the greater wetland ecosystem (which includes the Everglades). Different alternative actions for preserving this watershed are discussed, with federal ownership recommended. The appendix includes an implementation plan for federal acquisition. Maps of the region are included.
