Bark beetles are a major factor in the destruction of unmanaged, old-growth ponderosa pine. The northeastern California ponderosa-jeffery pine, called eastside pine, have been timer-harvested by various methods over the last half century. The harvesting methods for insect-caused mortality has confronted the forest manager with unanswered questions. The cutting method has profound influence on the damage by bark beetles for many years after logging, or with little or no effect. Mortality data from various methods were analyzed to determine with alternative best applies in management of eastside pine forests. It is suggested that logging susceptible trees sharply reduces the volume of timber killed, no matter the harvesting method. Logging high-risk trees is found effective for a longer period than once believed.
