Chiropteran community structure and seasonal dynamics in the Chihuahuan Desert, Big Bend National Park, and observations on Lasiurus xanthinus in Texas

A mist-net survey was conducted at Big Bend National Park, Texas, from March 1996 to September 1998, with 1978 captures of 18 chiropteran species. Specific sites were monitored year-round to obtain information on community structure and seasonal activity. Four western yellow bats (Lasiurus xanthinus) were captured, representing the first records of this species in Texas. Species identification was confirmed with diagnostic restriction sites in the mitochondrial 12S ribosomal RNA gene. One L. xanthinus was radio-tracked and found roosting in Giant Dagger Yucca (Yucca carnerosaana), a roost not previously known to be used by this species
