The Chitina Basin herd originated with animals that had been transplanted from the National Bison Range in Moise, Montana, to Delta Junction, Alaska in 1928. In 1962, 29 cows and 6 bulls were transplanted from Delta Junction to May Creek. By 1981 the herd incresed to 56 bison, and in 1987 the herd numbered 45. Population objectives are to maintain the herd at a minimum of 50 overwintering adults. Aerial surveys to determine herd composition were conducted. Harvest and hunting pressure was controlled by allowing hunting by drawing permit only.
