During 1996, there were 18 dead stranded marine animals on Assateague Island National Seashore (ASIS), Maryland. No live stranded animals were found. Of the 9 marine mammals, there were 3 Bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus), 1 Common or Saddleback dolphin (Delphinus delphis), 3 Harbor porpoises (Phocoena phocoena), 1 Harbor seal (Phoca vitulina), and 1 Harp seal (Phoca groenlandica).There were 9 Loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta). One Loggerhead seaturtle was found on the bayside marsh, and all other animals were found on the ocean shore. Cooperative Oxford Laboratory (COL), through Marine Mammal/Sea Turtle Stranding Network, completed reports on 12 individual strandings, while ASIS staff completed reports on 6 strandings. The 18 strandings in 1996 is an average number for the Maryland portion of the seashore.
