Hair mineralization of the snowshoe hare (Lepus americanus) in interior Alaska

Hair was plucked whole from snowshoe hares (Lepus americanus) in Fairbanks, Alaska where populations were experienceing a cyclic low, and in McCarthy, Alaska where hares were at a higher population density. Hair was analyzed using atomic spectroscopy for determination of mineral concentrations. No significant differences were found between sexes with regard to hair mineral concentrations. Hares from McCarthy, Fairbanks, and Goldstream Valley differed in 14 elements. McCarthy and Fairbanks differed in nine elements, McCarthy and Goldstream differed in six, and Fairbanks and Goldstream differed in ten elements. Differences in 11 elements arose between McCarthy summer and winter fur. Two samples from the same population at McCArthy sampled in the same month and area differed in 9 elements. Interpretaion of results is independent, partly, upon experimental feeding of hares in captivity.
