Assateague Island National Seashore: Additions to Flora and Rare Plant Surveys and Status, 1996-1999
Lea C, Hamilton H, Hudson FK, Roeder N. 2000. Assateague Island National Seashore: Additions to Flora and Rare Plant Surveys and Status, 1996-1999
Field work was conducted from 1996 through 1999 at the barrier island sections of Assateague Island National Seashore and Assateague State Park, Maryland in order to locate historical occurrences of rare species and to document species not previously known from these areas. Of 32 species presently (1997) regarded as being of conservation concern in Maryland that were previously documented in the Maryland portion of Assateague Island (rare, highly rare, extirpated, or status uncertain), 24 were relocated. General conservation recommendations and information pertinent to future state rankings are presented. Voucher specimens were collected for 15 species not previously reported for the National Seashore/State Park, 2 species previously reported but not vouchered, and for 1 species not vouchered at the National Seashore herbarium. One apparently newly established exotic species, Carex kobomugi, is regarded as invasive and is recommended as a management target.
