The purpose of this study was to determine if the invertebrate communities in lower Crumb Elbow Creek, Dutchess County, NY showed any indications of impact from prior discharges of alum to the stream from the former Hyde Park, NY water treatment plant. No indications of toxic stress were found at any of the sites downstream of the discharge. The downstream site improved compared to the upstream site in terms of: species richness, biotic index, percent model affinity, and EPT richness (the number of species of mayflies, stoneflies, and caddisflies in a sample). There was no loss of the 5 dominant species at Station 1;there were losses at other stations but these stations also had impoundment/lake effects or bedrock habitat type that limited fauna. Sampling took place on one day, September 13, 1995.
