Following a general overview of the flora of the three Flagstaff, Arizona, national monuments covered in this study, the report summarizes results of 1999 surveys to identify and map locations of 17 special-status plant species within the monuments. Previous efforts included a complete literature and herbaria review. Work in 1999 was intended to complete this survey of special-status plants at the monuments by providing baseline information on occurrence and abundance. Of 17 species on the search list, only 6 were found within the monuments. Individual species accounts note current and historical locations of major populations (with maps), which plants are the rarest and most threatened on the monuments, monitoring priorities, and ethnobotanical significance of the species. Lists on pages 26-27 identify other rare species and culturally significant plants rare in the monuments. One of the primary current threats to these populations is over-collecting. The authors include recommendations for management and further research, along with a bibliography and photo appendix (mostly species illustrations).
