"This paper reports the progress of an ongoing project to develop an inventory of the fungi of the Bandelier area, New Mexico, and describes the relationships of these fungi with vascular plants and fire ecology. The goal of this ongoing survey was to collect and identify (at least to genus) as many macroscopic fungi species as possible, and thereby assess fungal diversity. The survey (during the summer seasons of 1991-93) is represented by 836 specimens, collected from a variety of habitats. These were identified, recorded in a computer database, dried and stored in an herbarium. 228 species were identified in 118 genera, 95% of the specimens being identified to genus and 81% to species. In Bandelier alone, 145 specimens were collected in 1991-92 and 270 specimens in 1993, representing at least 74 genera and 93 species. All 3 basic types of fungi were found, parasitic, saprophytic, and mycorrhizal. Mycorrhizal fungi composed roughly 3/4 of the collection. A variety of sites were studied, with special attention being paid to those that were burned in recent years, or will be burned soon. The only distinct correlation observed was with precipitation (and thus altitude)." [Tree CD]
