(Author's abstract) 'A terrestrial-mammals investigation of the Cape Thompson-Ogotoruk Creek region was made during 1959, 1960, and 1961. There are 21 species known to be present and 4 species found nearby and possibly present; 3 species have been extipated from the region. the food web of the local ecosystem is outlined in this capter. there are three main utilizers of vegetation: the microtine rodents, the arctic ground squirrel, and the barren-ground caribou. Almost all other mammals, including man, consume these herbivores, either directly or indirectly. Such a poorly supported food web is unstable. the population density and biomass of the small mammals undergo marked changes that are believed to be parts of cyclic fluctuation in other parts of Alaska, and, indeed, changes between parts of the study region itself are not in phase. Morphology and the percentage of snow cover on each of the study plots are recorded. Snow data are related to ecological distribution and population dynamis of some of the small mammals.'
