(Author's abstract) 'A generally widespread and delayed spring breakup on the western tundra and on the North Slope will detract from waterfowl production in Alaska this year. A somewhat late-normal breakup in the interior with only slight flooding where substantial flooding sometimes occurs should result in perhaps average production in the taiga. In general, most calculated duck populations increased in size from 1999 but the numbers may be misleading. Unusually high numbers of flocked waterfowl were encountered which were perhaps caught en route to the North Slope or were counted both in taiga strata during migration and later on the western tundra. Changes in duck populations by category are as follows. Dabblers are up 29% from last year, are 61% above the 10-year average, and are 137% above the long-term mean. Divers are up 33% from 1999, up 30% from the 10-year average, and are up 41% from the long-term mean. Miscellaneous are up 7% from 1999, up 1% from the 10-year average, but are down 16% from the long-term mean. Total ducks are up 28% from 1999, up 47% from the 10-year average, and are 80% above the long-term mean. Overall, goose production may be about average in the interior but below average on the western tundra. Trumpeter swan production should be reduced from recent years north of the Alaska Range. Trumpeter swan production should be below average on the western tundra and on the North Slope.'
