In recent years, the white-tailed deer population in CVNP has grown. Deer populations in some areas of the park range between 30-100 deer /sq. mile, with the average being about 40 deer per square mle. Currently, the National Park Service is collecting background information to help assess the deer management situation and analyze potential deer management alternatives. This study was conducted as part of a larger effort to assess the deer populations, the natural and social effects of the increased number of deer, as well as the potential biological, social, and psychological impacts of the management alternatives, lethal control and no action.
