Study of the Gallatin elk herd in the upper West Gallatin River drainage and northwest Yellowstone National Park. Winter counts 1939-1949 averaged 1700. Calves were marked with metal and plastic eartags to study sex ratio, coloration, glands, odor, voice, reactions, development, prefered calving areas and cover types, and adverse factors.
