Utah prairie dog survey was conducted between May 14 and May 28, 1997. All complexes were surveyed on two different days to ensure accuracy of the count at each site. Two surveyors counted prairie dogs at each complex with the highest count being recorded. The spring survey resulted in a table of data and maps of indicating size and location of complexes. A total of 59 Utah prairie dogs were counted this year. This is the third consecutive year the spring count has declined in numbers. This is not due to the loss of a prairie dog complex but due to an overall decline at each complex. This decline may be attributed to lower than average precipitation since 1994. Fortunately the population has not declined below the 1984 though 1986 levels.
