Shrub-grassland small mammal and vegetation responses to rest from grazing

The macrohabitat-scale part of this study compares four grazed sites within Capitol Reef National Park with two ungrazed sites in Canyonlands National Park and two ungrazed sites on lands just outside the park boundaries managed by the Bureau of Land Management (Grand and Wayne counties). The "ungrazed" sites had been heavily used in prior years, but had at least 30 years rest since the last grazing and were rated in excellent condition. Another part of the study examined small-scale (patch) areas using 4 exclosures at Capitol Reef (3 established about 6 years ago, and one in 1951) and nearby grazed areas. The report discusses small mammal responses to the varying conditions, and notes that the variability of these responses "has important implications for ecological monitoring efforts...." Vegetation response indicates rather rapid recovery from grazing with adequate rest. Bibliography pages 202-203.
