Swanson SA. 1992. 1991 raptor surveys: Gates of the Arctic National Park and Preserve. GAAR-91-001. Fairbanks, AK
(Adapted from author's abstract). Surveys for cliff nesting raptors were conducted on the Alatna, Itikmalak, Killik, Kobuk, Middle Fork of the Koyukuk, and Noatak Rivers, Gates of the Arctic National Park and Preserve, Brooks Range, Alaska, June - July 1991. Raptor observations an nest descriptions were recordes on USFWS nest observation cards and entered into a computer database. Raptor abundance was highest on the Itikmalak and Kobuk Rivers and lowest on the Alatna River. Species diversity was highest on the Kobuk and Noatak Rivers and the lowest on the Alatna River. Nest abundance was highest on the cliffs along the Killik River, but 88% of the golden eagle nests were inactive. The highest number of active nests was found on the Noatak and Kobuk Rivers. Five active osprey nests were located on the Kobuk River. Data collected on these surveys will be used to establish a long-term monitoring program for raptors in the park and preserve.
