Bear surveys were conducted on the Noatak River between Tupik Creek and Lake Matcharak to document bear distribution and identify areas where bears may concentrate. Information was also collected on bear scat content, feeding and digging areas, sighting information, salmon escapement information, and distribution information was collected for three berry species. The goals of this project were to 1) develop an economical, non-intrusive bear monitoring program for the Upper Noatak River and 2) minimize the bear/human interaction potential. Of 50 bear sightings (single bears or family groups), 76% were single adult animals, 14% were females with cubs of the year, and 10% were females with older cubs. Sightings were spread along the entire length of the upper Noatak River drainage.
