This report summarizes results of a three-year small mammal study. Six species of small mammals were captured in the Kobuk Preserve Unit, Gates of the Arctic National Park and Preserve, 16-29 August 1993, including: masked shrews, pygmy shrews, dusky shrews, yellow-cheeked voles, brown lemmings, and northern bog lemmings. Snall mammals were trapped in museum special snap traps and pitfall traps on 4 grids in areas with varying fire histories. Species diversity and abundance was greatest in a 15-year-old burn and lowest in an unburned alluvial stream terrace. Red-backed voles were the most abundant small mammal captured. Snap traps accounted for 61% of small mammal captures, but lemmings and shrews were captured almost exclusively in pitfall traps.
