(Adapted from author abstract) This study was conducted in order to determine the stock status of spawning sheefish Stenodus leucichthys in the upper Kobuk River. Objectives were to estimate abundance, and length and age compositions of spawning sheefish in a 130 km readh of the upper Kobuk River and to estimate harvest of the subsistence gillnet fishery on Hotham Inlet. Sampling took place 28 July through 29 September 1997 with hook and line and beach seine methods. Data on length, sex, and age were collected, and fish were then marked with a Floy tag. A survey of subsistence and commercial fisheries in Hotham Inlet was also conducted in April and May 1997. The largest proportion of female sheefish was age 13 and age 11 for males and the 925 mm (901-925mm) category had the largest proportion of females, while the 775 mm category had the largest proportion of males. The total harvest for 1996-1997 subsistence gillnet fishery was estimated at 13,704 and tag returnes from previous years were inconclusive.
