Records documenting the historical distribution and abundance of the humpback chub, Gila cypha, a federally listed endangered species, and factors associated with its decline are exceedingly sparse. There are several reasons for this lack of knowledge. The species was not described until 1946, and prior to that time it was included as part of the endemic Colorado River Gila robusta complex. The fish primarily exists in relatively inaccessible canyon areas, and it apparently was rare in most historical collections.
