Distribution, abundance, and growth of juvenile sockeye salmon, Oncorhynchus nerka, and associated species in the Naknek River system, 1961-64
Ellis RJ. 1974. Distribution, abundance, and growth of juvenile sockeye salmon, Oncorhynchus nerka, and associated species in the Naknek River system, 1961-64. U.S. National Marine Fisheries Service Report. SSRF-678. Seattle
This report analyzes data from four major connected lakes - Coville, Grosvenor, Naknek, and Brooks - and from the outlet stream, Naknek River, which connects the lakes to the ocean. A description is given of the general distribution and relative abundance of all species of fish in the system. This is followed by a discussion of the abundance of juvenile sockeye salmon in pelagic habitats. Other topics discussed are juvenile migration, relative growth, and predation. Finally, all of the available information is summarized to consider factors limiting sockeye production. Sockeye smolt production was found to be stable and was attributed to the existence of several races that utilized widely separate spawning areas, which helps ensure against catastrophic loss of any year's egg production. The author believes the system could support greatly increased runs.
