This study plan describes the need for research regarding the springs and seeps along the Colorado River corridor within the lengthy stretch administered by the three National Park Service units in the title. Within the surrounding arid land, these water sources support a large degree of diversity in both plants and animals, and little previous study has been done. Present threats to both water quality and the biota of these isolated sites include impacts of the increasing recreational activity, the associated introduction of exotic riparian species, and water changes associated with global warming and ground water pumping. Baseline studies at these sites are needed soon to allow assessment of losses resulting from all of these changes. The plan describes the limited prior water quality and floristic work, work methods for this study, and products. Work will cover flora and vegetation, water quality, aquatic invertebrates (with particular effort to find new populations of the endangered Kanab ambersnail), site features to be recorded, data analysis, and specimen disposition. The final report is to include recommendations for monitoring.
