This annual report documents and analyzes FIREPRO activities for the summer of 1991. The record is organized into three sections. The first describes fire monitoring and suppression activities within WRST and adjacent protected areas. The second summarizes helicopter use in WRST and other Alaskan resource management units. The third and largest section of this report describes the procedure and discusses the results of the field work completed for the GIS project in WRST in 1991. The primary purpose of the FIREPRO crew assigned to WRST is to accomplish work associated with fire management and suppression. When not directly involved in monitoring or suppressing wildland fires, the crew is dedicated to completing a vegetation survey for the Geographic Information System group of the Alaska Regional Office, Division of Natural Resources. FIREPRO crews play an essential role in developing land cover maps by obtaining field information that will be compared with satellite imagery. From veg maps and other GIS information generated from FIREPRO field surveys, essential fuel loading and topography data can be incorporated into fire behavior models and programs. Also, this summer's field work data, coupled with data from previous work, will provide resource managers with substantial site specific vegetation inventories throughout WRST National Park.
