Priscella Russell was contracted by the National Park Service to compile information on Ahtna plant uses found at the visitor center site to assist in the interpretation of Ahtna ethnobotany. Ms. Russell had conducted interviews on plant uses with Ahtna elders during the 1970's while assisting Dr. James Kari in the preparation of an Ahtna dictionary. Ms. Russell synthezied information from her work in the 1970's into a document which she provided to the NPS and to the Ahtna villages in April 1998. Then, in 1998 she conducted interviews with eight elders to verify and enhance this information. This document summarizes the information from Ms. Russell's 1998 handwritten interview notes provided to the NPS by the Ahtna heritage foundation. interview data was entered into the relational Filemaker.pro database so that records could be linnked to a taxonomic database being used by the park botanist. The document describes the methodology used during the interviews and in preparing the database summary, lists the elders, plants found at the visitor center site which have Ahtna names, along with a printout of the database. The database includes: scientific name, life form, family, common name, Ahtna names, Ahtna translation from English, other Ahtna names for associated parts and a summary of uses.
