Holocene climate in the western Great Lakes National Parks and Lakeshores: Implication for future climate change

Reconstruction of climate change in the Great Lakes area since the last glaciation features studies using pollen analyses in the area's national parks and lakeshores. The authors paired modern air temperature data with current pollen deposition patterns and correlated them with the Holocene pollen record preserved in sediments from selected wetlands and bogs. A graph illustrates the relative frequencies of arboreal (tree) and non-arboreal (herbaceous) plant species from Tamarack Lake in Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore from nearly 8,200 years ago to the present. Other graphs depict the pollen record from lakes in other parks. Reconstructed seasonality differences in temperature are plotted for each of 6 parks. Future climate implications are discussed. A map illustrates locations of sampling sites.
