In February 1995, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service designated the southwestern willow flycatcher (Empidonax traillii extimus) as an endangered species. The breeding population is estimated to be between 300 and 500 pairs. The southwestern willow flycatcher's breeding range within Utah is limited to the southern half of the state. The southwestern willow flycatcher breeds in dense riparian habitat near surface water or saturated soil. Bryce Canyon National Park has several small riparian areas that meet the breeding range, elevation, plant species composition, and habitat structure parameters. In 1995, park staff delineated seven drainages as potential habitat.
