Solutes in stream water draining watershed ecosystems depict the integration of products from complex terrestrial biotic and abiotic processes. Such studies, conducted over time, were the first to alert North America regarding the effects of acid precipitation on forest health and ecosystem biodiversity. During the past several years, results from the same research sites show natural systems will take much longer to recover than originally anticipated following reductions in air emissions. Longer-term trends in stream chemistry may be set in place by altered atmospheric inputs, climate change, hydrology, land use, or in time ecosystem succession.
