In November 1993 Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve conducted a GDRH (Gasaway-type) survey for moose on a 1,386 sq.mi. area in the northwestern Wrangell mountains. The researchers expanded estimate was 835 moose (+/- 168.5 at the 90% CI) for an overall density of 0/60 moose/sq.mi. (232 moose/1,000 sq.km.). Herd composition was 20.6 calves: 8.7 yearling bulls: 27.5 large bulls: 100 cows.
