Describes an ongoing survey of birds in Knpahulu Valley beginning in 1976. A total of 27 species (13 families) were located between 1976 and 1980 (33% endemic, 18% indigenous, 48% exotic). Five of the native species are endangered: njnj (Nesochen sandvicensis), crested honeycreeper (Palmeria dolei), Maui parrotbill (Pseudonestor xanthophrys), nukupuu (Hemignathus lucidus affinus), and Maui akepa (Loxops coccineus ochracea). Of the exotic species, only two are common throughout the area -- the Red-billed leiothrix (Leiothrix lutea) and the Japanese white-eye (Zosterops japonica). Notes frequency patterns at various elevations. Recommends elimination of exotic plant and animal pests, such as strawberry guava (Psidium cattleianum), feral goat (Capra hircus), and feral pig (Sus scrofa). Table one lists bird species found in Knpahulu Valley. Two maps show distribution of endangered bird species in the Valley.
