Shade of pelage color was measured at two stations: Sierra Vieja Range, near Valentine, Texas, and Rio Grande, near Porvenir, Texas. On the basis of pelage color, the name ambiguus can be applied to the relatively pale-colored population of trhe Rio Grande Valley from El Paso to the Big Bend
