The susceptibility of Pacific Coast forests to insects, disease, and catastrophic fire is the result of a century of reduced ecosystem fire. The twin problems of fuel build-ups and forest health and their effects on forest ecosystem diversity and sustainability are likely to be the single most significant environmental challenge facing western forest managers in the next two decades.
