Large natural disturbances produce a patchy structure in landscapes. External changes, such as climatic change or the intentional suppression of disturbances, may alter this structure. Species sensitive to this structure may thus experience changes in available habitat, but species use the landscape at different spatial scales. . Parks and wilderness areas with unadulterated disturbance regimes are essential if we are to understand how and why landscapes change and the role that this change plays in the population dynamics of species.
