This report summarizes observations made in several studies of white/Lutz spruce regeneration in five subregions of South-central Alaska. Specifically, the core studies that have been in progress under the ASTF grant will be presented as of the fifth growing season of plantations west of Fairbanks on Tanana Chiefs Conference lands, at Fort Richardson, and on Ninilchik Native Association and CIRI lands on the Kenai Peninsula. At each location is a complete experiment of three site preparation methods and five stock types installed on recently logged sites and on sites which have been logged for 3-4 years and allowed to "green up". We include a small experimental subset, now four years old, of the ASTF treatments installed near Chitina on Ahtna lands within the Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve. The data regarding seedling growth will be presented according to choice of planting stock and site preparation treatment. In addition, we offer the more conceptual relationship between cover around each seedling and growth. On each ASTF installation, we also have five years of soil temperature records for each site preparation treatment. This report will provide an abstract of those data, reflecting that a report has already been submitted with a discussion of general findings through year 4.
