During the summer of 1991 work was begun on a project entitled " The Dynamics of Forest Succession in Bryce Canyon National Park". This project was funded by the Bryce Canyon Natural History Association and built on the previous work by Dr. Hayle Buchanan begun in 1957 and continued by Buchanan and Harper in 1980. There were three main objectives of the current study: 1) Provide a quantitative description of plant successional changes over the last 34 years; 2) Provide a pictoral record showing changes in park landscape and plant communities over time; 3) Provide a quantitative description of the soil associated with the 266 forest study plots. Completion of the three objectives contributes to the development and understanding of how changes occuring in the park relate to natural conditions and processes. In addition, understanding park ecology better will help guide park personnel in their efforts at protecting the park ecosystems through effective management. [From Report Introduction]
