These standard operating procedures have been compiled as guidelines to inventory and monitor backcountry trails and campsites in Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve. The impact rating system was modified from inventory and monitoring systems developed by Cole (1983), Parsons and MacLeod (1980) and Sydoriak (1983). The inventory of backcountry campsites and trails is important to establish baseline data for making knowledgeable and defensible managment decisions and to provide a basis against which to evaluate future impact changes. These changes may result from either management or visitor decisions relating to the amount and distribution of use. At this stage, it is more useful for management purposes to know the location, magnitude and patterns of human impact, than all possible data which might be of scientific use.
