This paper studies the competition for water between ponderosa pine seedlings and grasses on the La Mesa Burn site, Bandelier National Monument, NM. Seedlings and grasses were collected on the Escobas Mesa. The rooting depths and patterns were analyzed to predict the depths by which they withdraw water from the soil. The seasonal changes in soil moisture content and leaf water potentials were studied to determine the plants with the greatest water requirements.
