"Ninety-five taxa of aquatic macroinvertebrates were collected and identified from the two sites. The community of both sites was dominated by the pollution-intolerant mayflies, stoneflies, and caddisflies including many species which are especially intolerant to organic pollutants. Species richness and diversity were exceptionally high at both sites, and the functional structure was dominated by groups typical of clean headwater streams. The results of this investigation suggest that both streams have exceptional water qualities and support and rich, well-balanced fauna. These results should be useful in future monitoring at these two sites and in developing a system for biological monitoring of water quality in the Buffalo National River."
