Oysters of the genus Crassostrea do not produce successive generations in Tomales Bay, California, because of the failure of the larvae to survive and set. Excessive turbidities, lack of proper food, and blooms of dinoflagellates are probably major causes of oyster larvae mortality, although there are other contributing factors.
