The following annotated list is a summary of known amphibian and reptilian distribution in the Guadalupe Mountains region of Eddy County, New Mexico, and Culberson County, Texas. It is a revision of similar checklists written in 1955 and 1959. The phrase, to be expected, indicates an animal not yet recorded from the Guadalupe region. Species followed by an asterisk have not been collected or reported within the park boundary and should be looked for. Many of these are more characteristic of mesquite and creosotebush-whitethorn or tarbush plant communities in plains areas. The majority of recorded species have a wide elevational (hence ecological) range or inhabit the limestone outcrops and lechuguilla-sotol or juniper communities of the uplands. Relatively few reach the higher woodland communities denoted by gray oak, alligator juniper, and pinyon. No attempt is made to provide a key to identification or extended discussion of life history and ecology. However, certain diagnostic features which will help in field identification are given.
