Inventory of vascular plants of Biscayne National Park

Author Introduction: The National Park Service contracted The Institute for Regional Conservation (IRC) to conduct an inventory of the vascular plants of Biscayne National Park (BISC). The goal of the inventory has been to document the existence of at least 90% of the plant taxa within BISC, to quantify the abundance of each of these taxa, and to collect voucher specimens of plant taxa found in BISC. While previous floristic inventories had been compiled for BISC (e.g. Stalter et al. 1999, Hammer & Bradley 1998, Avery 1978), none were believed to document at least 90% of the park’s plant taxa. None of the existing floras indicated the abundance of the plant taxa within BISC. The current study was designed so that the researchers could visit every area of the park, including all islands and the mainland, and determine the abundance of each taxon within the park.
