The behaviorial patterns and adaptations of the desert tortoise, Gopherus agassizii, were studied in the arid desert regions of southwestern Utah. During a ten-year period (1935-1945), a stable colony of desert tortoises were observed, marked and recaptured; producing a total of 1093 tortoise records. This paper reviews the literature on desert tortoises, morphology (shell, skeleton, internal systems), reproductive cycle, habitat ecology, behavior patterns (social, territorial, hibernation), adaptations (food, water), and diseases.
