The authors examined two lava tube caves at El Malpais National Monument. The original intention was to use one cave as a control, and document conditions before and after a prescribed burn near the other, to allow development of predictions regarding effects of fires near caves. With postponement of the prescribed burn, the author used models of the cave climate as a means of prediction. The study includes documentation of temperature and humidity in the caves, invertebrates (species lists on pages 50-53), and air and water quality. Recommendations for future research include assessment of effects of human visitation on the ice in caves. Map pocket contains folded drawings of Frozen Mat and Lava Wall caves (ice, vegetation, rocks, and other surface litter); bibliography pages 60-63 (none local, and the literature review indicated little relevant prior work).
