The area proposed for the McCarthy employee housing and material staging project was designated to fall within delineated vegetation polygons B-1 and B-2, as described under the "Option B-Kennicott River South Site (Across from Kiosk)" within J. Allen's 2000 report. Polygon B-1 is primarily a Balsam Poplar (Populus balsamifera) woodland with a dominant soapberry (Shepherdia canadensis) understory, and polygon B-2 is an open white spruce (Picea glauca) forest. As indicated within the 2000 report, the area was not surveyed extensively at that time. Thus, the survey conducted July 12, 2002 is intended to be a supplement to the vegetation descriptions in these polygons, for the affected areas. The polygons were surveyed for rare and non-native plants, and to determine wetland status based on vegetation. Species lists were compiled for each polygon, and observations were organized by strata and the estimated cover. Also, the estimated cover of each signature strata was recorded.
