Black-capped and Carolina Chickadees, similar in most respects, probably do not interbreed. In the mountains their ranges are different. Where the two species occur together, as in winter in the lowlands, they can be distinguished by their calls. Much of the study was conducted on Clingmans Dome, Mount LeConte, Indian Gap, and Cove Mountain. Identification was by sight, by sound, and in some cases by collection
