The Blind Beetles of Mammoth Cave, Kentucky

The author lists six species of troglobitic beetles from the caves of Mammoth Cave National Park. The paper presents a key to identification of these species. Historic references, distribution, habitat, taxonomy, synonyms, and variations in the Mammoth Cave area are noted. The species include Neaphaenops tellkampfi tellkampfi; Pseudanophthalmus menetriesi (Motschulsky); Pseudanophthalmus pubescens (Horn); Pseudanophthalmus inexpectatus Barr; Ptomaphagus (Adelops) hirtus (Tellkampf); and Batrisodes (Babnormodes) henroti Park are presented. The author notes three other troglobitic beetles are found near Mammoth Cave National Park, but have not yet been found inside the park boundaries. They are Pseudanophthalmus barberi Jeannel; Batrisodes (Babnormodes) hubrichti Park; and Bythinopsis hubrichti Park. Only locations are given for these last three species. Specimens were collected from White Cave, Great Onyx Cave, and Mammoth Cave within Mammoth Cave National Park, and from Beckton Cave, Vance Cave, Brushy Knob Cave, and Cave City Cave (among others) near the park.
