Blood Parasites in Rock Ptarmigan from Eagle Summit, Alaska

This brief research note gives information on blood parasites seen in 162 rock ptarmigan collected in summer 1965 along the Steese Highway near Eagle Summit. Of the 162 ptarmigan, 146 (90%) revealed some parasitemia. Leucocytozoon was in 144 birds, of which 108 were two or more years old. Trypanosoma was of low invasion, found in 23 birds. Microfilariae were encountered only in birds two years old and older (20 of 124). Multiple infections were seen. The trypanosomes and microfilariae represent new host-parasite records for rock ptarmigan. Blood smears were also taken from three adult willow ptarmigan; all had Leucocytozoon and Trypanosoma.
